February Athlete of the Month – Emma Calhoun

1: Where are you from originally?

Here in Charlotte.

2. What is your favorite WOD/movement?

Everything.

3. What is your least favorite WOD/ Movement?

I can’t think of one I dislike.

4. What were you doing before CrossFit? How did you hear about CrossFit and/ CrossFit Northlake?

I was swimming nonstop. My mom brought me to try it out for a month during my offseason.

5. What other sports or activities do you participate in besides CrossFit?

I am a year round swimmer.

6. How many times per week do you CrossFit?

6-7.

7. What is your athletic background?

I’m on my 9th year of swimming!

8. Give us some insight as to your thoughts after your first workout at CrossFit Northlake.

I don’t really remember, but I know I’ve been hooked on it from the first day.

9. Do you have any special or favorite CrossFit Northlake memories/moments?

When I helped to coach the CrossFit kids girls program and got to speak with them about confidence and fitness. Watching and competing at the Goddess Games was a ton of fun too. Also, when I had a big swim meet and Amy gave me a card wishing me luck and a bag of snacks!

10. What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Northlake?

Enjoy yourself, you never know how much it could change your life! I was only gonna do it for 30 days but here I am 2 and a half years later.

11. What is your eating style?

I’m doing the paleo challenge right now and when we aren’t doing the challenge, I typically eat 65-35 Paleo because I love to take my friends’ snacks at school.

12. What kind of results have you seen since starting at CrossFit Northlake?

Mentally, I know what good coaching is now, and have realized that training doesn’t have to be boring and repetitive to be meaningful. I’ve improved all around physically too. I’m also a lot more aware of what I eat and how it translates into my performance!

13. What do you do for a living?

I’m an IB student at North Meck.

14. What drives you to be an active individual?

I just think CrossFit is really fun. Plus it makes me angry when people at school, especially girls, say females can’t lift weights or shouldn’t. Part of the reason I want to get better is to help in getting rid of the body image and physical capability stereotypes society puts on females. “You’re strong… for a girl.” isn’t a compliment!
One time my teacher told me that if I went into the same job as my male friend I would make $20,000 less than him because I would never get “the fist pump”. Being an athlete at CrossFit shows me that I can pursue and achieve the same thing any guy can, including getting the “fist bump”.
